The Grace Book Club will have its next meeting on Monday, February 12, at the home of Renate at our usual time of 7:30. We will be reading THE UNDERGROUND GIRLS OF KABUL by Jenny Nordberg. Jenny is an investigative journalist who uncovers a hidden trend that will transform your understanding of what it means to grow up as a girl in Afghanistan. It is a culture ruled almost entirely by men, the birth of a son is cause for celebration and the arrival of a daughter is often mourned as misfortune. A bacha posh (literally translated from Dari as "dressed up like a boy") is a third kind of child - a girl raised as a boy. Jenny writes a powerful and moving account of those secretly living on the other side of a deeply segregated society where women have almost no rights and little freedom.
We have also chosen our book for the Monday, March 12 meeting. It is not as serious as February's. The title is THE LAST LETTER FROM YOUR LOVER by Jojo Moyes. She is a favorite of ours. This novel is a sophisticated and page-turning love story spanning forty years. It all hinges on a letter signed only "B" and asking the lover to leave her husband. It is a spellbinding, intoxicating love story with a knockout ending.
Great fellowship is always the best part of the book club.
